SnapSCAD, a simple JavaScript app that allows you to build up OpenSCAD scripts via drag-and-drop snappable elements. Scratch is a great tool for teaching children to learn to program using drag-and-drop snappable elements to produce real programs. Snapscad: To overcome the programming gap Snapscad is a MIT's Scratch -like interface for OpenSCAD.Relatively easy to use - you can see your object oriented additions in real time in your browser and can save your code and export stls form 3D printing on your favorite open-source 3D printer. It is OpenSCAD style, with a Coffeescript based syntax, and extra features (object oriented, clean interface, code editor with line number, syntax highlighting etc, bom generation.). UltiCreator: UltiCreator uses CoffeeSCad, which is a browser based 3D solid CAD editor. To make OpenSCAD more accessible there are currently two solutions: OpenSCAD is great - but is best suited for programmers - and as such is a little difficult for non-programmers to learn - particularly young children who are not fast typers. For example see: Open source 3-D printing of OSAT OpenSCAD is most useful for designing parametric OSAT that can be 3-D printed. Besides DXF files OpenSCAD can read and create 3D models in the STL (for 3-D printing) and OFF file formats. In addition to 2D paths for extrusion it is also possible to read design parameters from DXF files. As data exchange format format for this 2D outlines Autocad DXF files are used. OpenSCAD provides two main modelling techniques: First there is constructive solid geometry (aka CSG) and second there is extrusion of 2D outlines. It is free software and available for Linux/UNIX, MS Windows and Mac OS X. OpenSCAD OpenSCAD official website is a software for creating solid 3D CAD objects. OpenSCAD - The Programmers Solid 3D CAD Modeller reviews, People, Sponsors, News, Updates on Twitter, YouTube With this work, it can happen in seconds.MOST: Projects & Publications, Methods, Lit. ) and with this integration, you can use these tools to glean information about your OpenSCAD model and use the result directly to change the OpenSCAD code.Įxample: today, you can't use OpenSCAD to place a sphere at the center of mass of a complex assembly. ![]() ![]() One thing in particular is really nice in Blender: you can measure things on a mesh (dimensions, center of mass of vertices, volume, area, etc. Second, I love OpenSCAD, as in: the language and the idea (code to geometry), but I find the UI very limiting.īlender is a very polished 3D environment that is being used by special effects professionals on a daily basis on real movie productions.Īs a result, the 3D environment, specifically navigation and tools to examine a 3D objects are very powerful.īy integrating OpenSCAD (the language and the engine) into the Blender UI, you get the best of both worlds. There are a lot more that needs to be done to make it as (or even more) usable as the native OpenSCAD GUI, but I plan to get there in the coming month.įirst, it's very easy to get an idea of what Blender can do without knowing how to use it: there are tons of video tutorial on Youtube. If you guys want to take a look, here’s what that looks like: I’ve started experimenting with the idea, and while there is still a lot to do and a lot to figure out and optimize in terms of workflow, I have built something that has reached usability level. So, I’ve had an itch I wanted to scratch for a very long time: the power and quickness of OpenSCAD for modeling, married with the power and depth of Blender for 3D navigation (and many other things). However, I am also a very long time Blender user, which IMO is unparalleled in the FOSS world for many things, but specifically for 3D navigation and interacting with 3D geometry in general. Long time user of OpenSCAD here, which - as someone with a coder background - is my favorite tool for creating quick CAD-like objects.
